Leaking MB battery ate thru wiring harness!!
Long stort short.
I had some problems with the overload relay. I got a new one and it fixed the problem for 1.5min. I took the car to our mb tech and he discovered the wiring harness going to the overload relay being completely eaten by battery acid ![]() This happened in a W124. Im very very mad about the leaking battery. Few weeks ago I cleaned out the battery tray, it was full of the white crap. I had no clue that it also went through the wires and basically ate away the harness. I know its a maint. battery, i filled it wit distilled water, but why did leak out so much, hot weather. Im so pissed off, if I call MB they probably wont say much. But common a friggging battery leaking acid like crazy WTF!! WHY DID I BUY A MB battery for ![]() ![]() For the same $$ i could have gotten some quality main. free battery |

Is the battery under the rear seat? If it is, did you have the vent tube hooked up?

The battery is in the engine compartment on the W124's, and I think this even extends to the coupes and cabriolet models.

Make sure the alternator isn't overcharging. How old is the battery? Was it over-filled?

Okay, thanks. I've never owned a 124, but on my 210 it is under the rear seat and I had the same gassing problem. You've got to vent them on the 210.

I'd run a vent hose out and down in along the front inner fender..you can have it vent harmlessly onto the street... Best way to keep this sort of thing from happening.
Good suggestion to check the voltage...overcharging is a great way to get your battery to puke.... Jonathan

300E's and E320's have the battery in the engine compartment.
I think 400E's and E420's have the battery under the rear seat. 500E's and E500's have the battery in the trunk.

The whole problem was that the hose wansnt hooked up. But there was no hose there at all. I blame mysef, I just didnt know any better.
Although, before, car had main. free sealed battery and perhaps the shop ipped out the hose when installing the sealed battery because they didnt see a use for it. ![]() |
