Over the past 2 years that I have owned my 2000 SLk 230, I have had to load it on a truck 7 times because of the following problem that neither foreign car mechanics or my local MB dealer has been able to diagnose correctly and repair. From time to time for no apparent reason, the ignition key will not turn to the start position. The car is in park, and the key will turn through the first 2 positions. Here are clues--- This never happens when the engine is cold, there is less than a half tank of gas. When it does happen, once the engine cools, the key will turn to start. That last time it happened, my wife was dring about 60 MPH and the engine just shut off. Once she pulled over the key would not turn to the start position. Called AAA and hauled it home. When I got home at the end of the day, the key turned to start and everything is OK,,,,, till the next time!!!! It may go for months and work fine. You never know when. Other than this proble, we love this car! Any information would be appreciated.
