Help - I did the unthinkable!

I was in a hurry, and brain not fully engaged, while changing the battery in my wifes '89 560SEL and didn't notice the posts on the (wrong) replacement battery were reversed. So the car was hooked up with reverse polarity for a brief instant. Sparks told me at the first touch that it was wrong.

Luckily it still starts and runs. The ABS light is on, the Check Engine light seems to be non-functional (possibly burned out bulb) and the car is idling at about 1800 rpm. Otherwise all the systems seem to work.

How do I get diagnostic information from the car so I can figure out what I need to replace?

...which is why the OVP is there in the first place...so that this type of incident doesn't fry more expensive components down the line...

...sometimes over-engineering is a GOOD thing...

Arrow

Check the silver small box near the fuse box and near the break pump.

It was the 10amp fuse in the OVP. A big thanks to you guys, I didn't even know about that device until it was mentioned here. And thanks to MB for saving me from disaster.

You REALLY dodged a bullet here. There should be a SAE specification that each individual component (ECU, radio, etc) in a car should be able to withstand reverse voltage indefinitely - but there's not!
