How does one remove the center unit above the ash tray on a 1999 E320. I lost a credit that slipped behind the unit. Do I need a special tool?

Move the shift lever to neutral, Open the ash tray door, slip your fingers in under the shift lever suround plate and give it a little yank to remove it. You will then see two phillips head screws at the base of the ashtray, remove the two screws and remove the ash tray. At this point you may find your card, but to continue, reach in where the ash tray was to the back of the storage compartment. reach up with your fingers and feel for a plastic release tab. I beleive you pull down on it slightly (or up) and the compartment will be come free to slide out.

Easier method:
Obtain keys and remove the radio head unit. Don't disconnect the wires. Reach into the opening and at the bottom, you'll feel the catch for the cubby. Push down and gently pull the cubby out, complete with the zebrano door. |
