AC question

Okay, so my new (to me) 300D with AC decided I should be punished for thinking how nice it was to be back in California where I actually wanted to use my AC in December. Was running fine, then squealed for 3 seconds before the belt snapped. Now the pulley spins, but the front of the compressor doesn't. PO had recharged with R134 a few months ago, but I have no idea how well cleaned out it was. I don't have the time to redo the AC now. Is there anything that is going to get WORSE if I don't rip it apart now. I figure I am going to have to follow Diesel Giants instructions either way. Even in Sunny California I have a few months before I really need it. Don't want to cause more problems by letting it set though.
