P0170 code question

My CEL comes on with a P0170 code. I clear it and it comes back a couple of days later (after 200-300 miles), so I'm ready to replace the Air Mass Meter soon.

Each time the light comes on, I get a strong odor of burning oil that lasts for a minute or two, then it goes away and there's no trace of an oil leak or anything of the sort. What's going on? Thanks,
Don

Opps, the car is a 1999 C230K.

By the way, it happens after driving on the highway for one hour, then going into city traffic for 10-15 minutes.

You redeemed youself before I got to ask you if this was a Ford or a Chevy.

I believe that code is for out of range readings. There are some voltage tests you can run, but 99% of the time it is the MAF as you suspect.
