96 E200 Estate. looking to buy, few questions

hi,

Going to look at a E200 Auto Estate tomorow with LPG conversion.

its got 207K Miles on it, a Full MB service history, it had the gearbox replaced by Merceds Benz 25K miles ago.

Is anyone familiar with the E200 petrol car? should this mileage be a concern on a small 4 pot?

thanks

Yes it should!

Small four cylinder engines fitted to relatively large cars as an E-state were created just to avoid extremely high taxes on countries were large displacement engines are heavily penalized.

The cars (i.e. E200, E220, E230, S280) would run fine for a while but the engine would constantly be under heavy stress due to the weight of the car. This in return provided high gas comsuption and usually early engine failure (if not meticously mantained).

The scenario worsens if the car is an automatic and is fully optioned. My advise would be: look for an E280 six-cylinder model.

its a w124, registered in 96 - not to confuse with the later model.

the car is auto - it had New Auto gearbox and UJ fitted one year ago by Mercedes. Heater Fan replaced a year ago, and both fuel pumps just replaced - never used. Tartarni LPG system fully overhaulded six months ago.

I had a 94 e280 and sold it a couple of years ago - had no complaints at all with that unit which had only covered 90K miles.

I'll probably still take a look just to satisfy my curiosity.

thanks for the reply.

cheers
