Changing Spark Plugs on 2001 E 320

I want to change spark plugs on my 2001 E 320. Just bought the car and it has 78000 Miles on it. Think it is time to change spark plugs. I just dont know if I need some special tools (space is pretty narrow). Do I have to pay any special attention to something? Any suggestions on what spark plugs I should buy? At Auto Zone they have spark plugs ranging from $3 all the way to $ 13.

Check the Owner's Manual for the recommended spark plugs for your 2001 E320.

Also note that it has 12 plugs - two per cylinder. I haven't yet done this task, so no advice to offer. (My 2001 only has 36K on it.)

Learn how to use the "SEARCH" feature of this board. There is tons of info on spark plugs. Study the posts that seem relevant and make sure you understand any risks you may encounter before you jump in there. ONLY use the plug specified in your owner's manual. If you don't have an owner's manual, call the nearest MB parts counter and get the part number from them. Don't trust Autozone or any other McParts place to get you the right number.

I changed the plugs on my 98 e-320 at 100K. I'm pretty sure it's the same engine and plug configuration. They were really tight and I must admit it was scary trying to break them loose, but I was able to do it. You need to take your time. A plug socket fits nicely into the spark plug well. First, you need to remove the engine shroud and it also helps to remove the coil packs (one per cylinder) that are attached to the valve covers. Mark them for location and note which wire on the coil pack (there are two) go to which plug. I also removed the air cleaner and air cleaner housing (all of it) to help get to the plugs on that side of the motor. Carefully remove the plug wires from the plugs. Obviously you don't want to be pulling on the plug wires, just the boots. A boot puller is handy to do this. Twist boots to help break them loose from the plug, then pull, gently with even pressure. Apply anti-sieze to plug threads, and di-electric grease to boots and neosporin to any skinned knuckles. For the correct plugs, call Phil at Fastlane. He'll make sure you get the correct ones. I think I paid between $125 and $150 for the 12 plugs required. I don't think I'd be buying Benz parts from Autozone. Don't forget to take your time. Good luck.

Requires two plugs per cylinder.

F1000-170021 Spark Plug Bosch IN STOCK $10.28

This is what Fastlane lists for your car, you will need 12. MB recomends replacement every 100k miles OR 4 years. The 4 year one is so you can get them out without stripping the threads in the head.

I think it's five years, not four. I am, however, too lazy to walk downstairs and get the maintenance manual out of the car.

Neosporin! Now that's funny. I need to add that to my big red rollaround tool box.
