How common is "working" automatic locks on older Mercedes? (meaning 91' and older)

First of all- when (if at all) did Mercedes switch to electric powered door locks? Since our "clocks" thread turned out good, I thought I would post another question about what "works".

I am assuming that the automatic door locks on my 1985 are vacuum operated? I have heard of lot problems with these locks on the older Mercedes, but wondering just how common the problems with this system are. How many here have problems with this system? When they do fail, what is usually the problem?

So far, the ones on my 85' are still in perfect working order (knock on wood) and I hope they stay like that. Seems like when my doors lock, it also locks the gas lid, as well as the trunk, which is normal as far as I know. I have not really taken the time to read my newly acquired owners manual yet.

Also, just for a quick answer (incase I do not have time anytime soon to look at it), is there anyway you can lock/unlock the doors while driving? I am still trying to get familiar with these buttons on this car, but really do not see anything that looks like a door lock button. I just thought of this- perhaps if I just simply press down on the door lock on the door, then they will all lock? I may get a "DUH" answer from this. If that is the case, anyway just to unlock one door instead of them all?

I will try it tomorrow.

Thanks!
