I believe it was Gilly who said to fill auto transmissions to about 10mm below the low mark on the stick cold. When warm, with the expandsion of the fluid it should be at mid-way between the low and full marks.

If you don't have a topsider, try removing one of the cooler lines at the radiator, aiming it into a receptacle and cranking the engine with the coil wire off. Much easier and cleaner than removing the drain plug.
