Just as the odometer reached 65,000 miles, the SRS light came on in my '97 E420. Before I blindly go to the local dealer for advice, does anyone know whether this is a quick-fix or a more serious problem? Thanks

Simon

SRS

I have a 92CE in Costal Northern California and my SRS light stays on briefly after starting at 60 degrees/Sea Level. While visiting family in Auburn at 20 degrees/2000ft,
it came on and stayed on for a few min. after startup! An independent MBZ shop told me the most common reason for this is low battery voltage. The battery appears to be original and since the light returned to it's previous behavior at home, I'm sure this is my problem. You're smart to investigate first - this could be an open checkbook for your favorite authorized Mercedes Benz dealer.

A very common cause of SRS lights coming on is worn slip rings in the steering wheel. Mine did that. Slip rings replaced under warranty and no further problems. Not a real expensive fix as I recall.

SRS light

Same problem with our 94 C280, took it to Chuck in Houston. Found out the passenger seat belt switch was the fault. So the SRS would not deploy if need be. Will get it replaced under the extended warranty. MB dealer in Houston wants 100 per dashlight for diagnostics. Hard for me to understand since the electronics is already hooked up to run the tests. Local tech did it for 65.00 and in less than 1/2 hour and is a great guy to boot. You Houston guys give him a call!

Find you a tech you can develop a trust and relationship with worth the effort. LH
