cooling system air purge

I change the thermostat yesterday at -15C/5F. I needed hot air in the cabin....
Before I get a good manual so I don't have to aks you guys these rookie question.
How do I purge air in the 1981 300sd cooling system?
It is still very cold out there today -20C/-3F. Fast and organize intervention is the only way to go!

the way i have always done it

is to start the car and bring it to op temp so that the stat opens. then add water as the air is distributed. and repeat a couple times more.

brian suggests removing the upper rad hose and filling from there. this is not as convenient but should speed the process up.
