Matching numbers...
I'm thinking about buying a Mercedes and want to be sure that all the numbers match to ensure that it is all original. Does anyone know how to verify that an engine number matches the VIN number?
Thanks. SS |

DB didn't stamp a "VIN derivative", which includes the VIN sequence number on the block like we look for on vintage Corvettes.
The 9th through 14th digits of the engine number are on the Maroney label along with the VIN, and the maintenance booklet should have a card glued to the inside back cover that has the VIN, complete engine number, OE tire date codes, and other coded information. Unless you are buying from an original owner, the seller probably doesn't have these documents, but you should certainly ask for them. If you post model and year, date of manufacture(see the DOT certification label in the driver's door jamb), VIN, and complete engine number, somone with the same year model may be able to tell you if the numbers "make sense".
