Removing Instrument Panel for 1992 300SE

The digital odometer, trip-odometer and temperature are not recognizeable. I can make out some of the numbers most most are chopped off. I assume the Instrument Cluster needs replacement. There is a company in Los Angeles that repairs these but I'm having difficulty removing the instrument cluster. Are there special tools? It appears this unit just slides right into the dashboard.

Anyone's assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks Jeff

Hello Jeff,

You are right about the cluster, it slides right in, but you need two hooks to get it out. You can eighter make them your self or buy them from MB. I just changed the fuse for the light in the centerconsole, and I found out that you have to unscreew the speedocable to get the cluster out. You can just get your hand in behind the cluster and unscreew it, but its not easy.

Yes, the instrument cluster slides in easily but sometimes it doesn't slide out so easily. The 1992 S-Class (W140) doesn't use a speedometer cable.

I find it simpler to remove the drivers' side A/C dash vent first. Then you can reach in behind the cluster and PUSH it out. If you pull too hard using the hooks they can slip and damage the cluster housing.
