My 92 190E 2.6 rear engine seal is leaking and needing replacement. I took it to an independent shop for evalution and they quoted me a 10 hr labor job (10x$70) or $700. Seals and harware about $35. First of all, does this sound about right as far labor charges? Also, should I get the valve stem seal replace at this time if this saves labor time? I enjoy driving this car; it's a Sportline model and would like to keep it for another 100k. Thanks!

cost sounds about
in line. I recently replaced mine (myself) and spent 3 six hour days doing it but this was my first one. The valve stem seals do not really have anything to do with the rear engine seal.

BlackMercedes,
I went to a reputable independent shop and they diagnosed that the rear seal was bad. Two weeks ago they performed the repaired and I was told that the front crank area is wet also. The tech told me to drive the car for a week and come back for followup inspection. Took the car back yesterday and was told this time that the oil pan gasket is leaking also, along with the front crank-seal. I still notice that the car drops a few drops of oil now and then, but oil usage has dropped. My concern is can I live with this for a while, or should go for another major repair. Lastly, any idea how much this may cost me (oil pan, front seal)? -Larry -98 C280Sport 40k -92 190E Sportline 120k |

Hummm....
Sounds like they are replacing everything instead of diagnosing the problem. You already paid them to fix the problem which they stated was the rear seal! Michael
