My 92 190E 2.6 rear engine seal is leaking and needing replacement. I took it to an independent shop for evalution and they quoted me a 10 hr labor job (10x$70) or $700. Seals and harware about $35. First of all, does this sound about right as far labor charges? Also, should I get the valve stem seal replace at this time if this saves labor time? I enjoy driving this car; it's a Sportline model and would like to keep it for another 100k. Thanks!

cost sounds about

in line. I recently replaced mine (myself) and spent 3 six hour days doing it but this was my first one. The valve stem seals do not really have anything to do with the rear engine seal.

BlackMercedes,

I went to a reputable independent shop and they diagnosed that the rear seal was bad. Two weeks ago they performed the repaired and I was told that the front crank area is wet also. The tech told me to drive the car for a week and come back for followup inspection. Took the car back yesterday and was told this time that the oil pan gasket is leaking also, along with the front crank-seal. I still notice that the car drops a few drops of oil now and then, but oil usage has dropped. My concern is can I live with this for a while, or should go for another major repair. Lastly, any idea how much this may cost me (oil pan, front seal)?

Hummm....

Sounds like they are replacing everything instead of diagnosing the problem. You already paid them to fix the problem which they stated was the rear seal!
