New addition to the "family".

Hi everyone. I just bought a 2000 Jeep Cherokee for my wife. It's got 86K on the clock and it looks like somebody took really good care of it. The thing is, I've been with MB for so long I've never even been under the hood of a Jeep! Anybody know of a DIY'er site for Jeeps? Anyone have any personal experience? I gave it a good look before I bought it, but I have no clue about the common issues they have, or what to expect down the road. All responses appreciated. Thanks

They suffer from a number of serious congenital problems in the 87k to 90k range, very much like clockwork - so everyone tries to dump them around 85k to 86k. Just kidding. Does that make it a 4.0 straight six? I believe it's a well regarded motor and quite easy to work on. But the web sites may all be focused on driving over tree stumps.

my wife's 2002 4.0L Grand Cherokee is OK, but it's touchy about tires...I replaced the factory Goodyears with identical tires. I went on several websites, and several manufacturers, including Conti, say they do not make a tire that is appropriate for this vehicle, even though they build ContiTrac SUV's in the right size. I'll take that to mean you have to be careful with tire selection. The stupid thing has 68K on it, and has never shifted consistently, the 1-2 shift is noticeably higher when the car has 1/2 tank or less in it, not sure why. It also seems to start off from a stop in 2nd sometimes, although there is no rhyme or reason to it.

I do like that oil changes are easy as pie with all that space underneath and the filter easily accessible from above. I'm told that the 4.0 engine will start burning LOTS of oil if you don't do frequent oil changes, it's touchy about that.

I've heard nothing but good stories from owners who have the 4.0 liter straight six engine. It is loud, course, unrefined, but durable and long-lived. 200,000 + miles on these engines seem to be common.

its funny...working at a quick lube oil change place, whenever I see the Jeep's with the straight six, the valve cover reminds me of the m103/m102 straight 6/4 from the 80's 90's mbs...just an obvservation

These kinds' of posts are one of the things I love about this Forum.

Yeah, it's got the 4.0L in-line six. How can you not love a straight six? The important thing is, my wife loves it.

A woman I work with has the 4.7L V8 and says she really wishes she had gotten the 4.0L...she wasn't clear on her reasoning though. She does have leather and nicer wheels than ours, which is a middle-of-the-line Laredo with cloth seats that show every speck of dirt...they are dark, dark gray, almost black. The black carpet is tough to keep clean too, the way it's woven all sorts of things the kids track into the car don't want to come off when vacuumed.
