1995 S500 (W140) Transmission Issue

My parents 1995 S500 (~57,000 miles) has been having problems with the transmission lately; specifically the reverse gear.

The problem is that the car does not reverse when you put in reverse gear. We drove the car last night and the reverse gear did work, but had to press the accelerator pedal significantly to get it going.

Any clues as to what the problem may be? All the other gears work normally, btw.
