Instrument Cluster 208 CLK Cabrio

I replaced a faulty Instrument Cluster (LED display and fuel gauge reading problems) with a second hand unit. I'm having difficulty coding the replacement unit, my fuel gauge reads backwards and I am told it is imposible to recode values for the fuel gauge. Is this true??. I'm scared to buy a new Cluster and end up with the same proplem. Please help

the cluster cannot be recoded from one vehicle to the next, they are "married" to the original vehicle that they were installed in. the cluster has the vin coded in from the car it was removed from. your only option is to buy a new one if you want everything to work properly, if that was your problem in the first place. they can only be properly coded using mercedes factory laptop tool.

Thank you Ray for your reply, I am supprised that such a link between control units exists to prevent a fuel gauge reading correctly. Ah, I should say nothing supprises me anymore in this industy.
By the wayI have istalled WIS now and it works extremly well, instalation was a bit of a challange but your instructions where spot on. Thank you again.
I'm still shaking my head for a fuel gauge reading back to front!!

glad wis went well for you. we have the factory tool, and have in the past attempted to re code a used one without sucess, what is the price you were quoted for a new one? have you inspected the sending units in the tank?

Yes Ray I have replaced the sender units with the updated version, no success. When I connected the second hand cluster I had a different fuel gauge reading (maby the reading from the car it came from) when I transfered all the settings from the old to the replacment cluster I ended up with my incorrect reading again. So I must have transfered the fuel gauge calibration into the new cluster. Dont tell me this will happen if I buy a brand new cluster from MB???. How can a brand new cluster be calibrated to the exact ammount of fuel that in the tank?? and why cant it be done to any cluster??
So many questions. I have no problems with BM,s VW,s Audis etc they can all be programed to specs.
