1984 BMW 325E Fuel Leak -Help!

OK, it's not a Mercedes question, sorry up front for that.

So far I've replaced the intake bellows, the charcoal cannister, and quite a bit of fuel line, plus did a full tune up. Still, I'm getting a strong smell of fuel when the car is sitting still. One of the injectors is leaking ever so slightly, but I don't think it could cause the amount of smell I'm getting.

Back to the mechanic tonight, assuming I don't blow up first.

If the charcoal cannister is full of fuel and leaking (again), what could cause that, other than a faulty cannister?

Thanks in advance!

Probably your canister. The link below is to some technical information that will help you make that determination.

Scroll down about page 3 or so

Other thoughts - throw the canister away. and .... the fuel line at the front of the engine...running from the "hard line" under the mani to the fuel rail will leak intermittently at the clamp to the hard line.

Thanks for the reply.

The thing about the canister is this - I haven't put any new gas in the car since it was replaced, so overfilling the tank isn't the problem.

I'll look into the other things. Thanks.

Do you notice any drips under the area of the back passenger door? It doesn't take much gas to give off alot of odor.

No, I notice drips up front by where the canister is that I just replaced. Without putting the car up on a lift, I can't be sure.

Cant remember if that car has a purge valve or not - I would not sweat it, not going to be a major deal. If you pull off the canister - don't plug off the blue line. Get her in the air and see what's going on

I spoke with Bavauto and they said the same thing about overfilling the tank, but as I said, I haven't put any gas in it since it was replaced. The second thing they suggested might be the problem is the expansion tank might be obstructed (I'm assuming the return line from the canister?).

I have a 1988 325 ci which I use as a winter beater so I don't have to drive my garage queen 92 400E in nasty weather. The gas tanks are 2 piece units that all seem to fail at the seem over time. It's very common and I would bet it is why you smell gas. It's kind of a big job to replace the tank as the drivetrain needs to be lowered to do it. I only fill it up half way and it doesn't leak or smell.
