Climate control buttons don't work

Has anyone had any success with removing and cleaning the contacts for the climate control computer for 560 SEL? Mine only works on automatic speed with economy or AC. If I hold in the other function buttons the unit works fine and switches to the other settings so I believe the problem is dirty contacts for the less used buttons. This does not bother me much, but I like to be able to put the fan on low or off once in a while. At the moment, these are some of the non-functional switches.

Also, does anyone know the procedure for removing the Climate interface and how involved of a job it is. I really don't want to go poking around first less I break some of the wood inaly.

Thanks,

Adam

As far as I've seen, the most common problem with the controller of the a/c and the like, is the circuit boards getting old and solderjoints cracking. If you search this site with that in mind, you should be able to find alot of usefull info. If you want my own personal opinion, I would suggest taking out the circuit behind the buttons you see (I'm not sure of the least distructive way of doing that) Once it's out, use a medium-wattage, around 45ish, and re-flow every solder joint on the bottom and top boards. If it's done right, this technique can fix many problems with the a/c. I've done the same thing with my idle speed controller two days ago and it fixed my idle problem right up.

Hi Adam,

It's easier to pull and resolder the joints on the CCU on pre-88 SEL's. The later CCU units don't allow full access to all the circuit boards, the earlier one's do. If you do a search on climate control you'll find threads with photos of each step. Also check the DIY section.

Good luck!

Bill
