Question Tranny Question

I am wondering if someone can tell me what to watch out for when taking off the body that holds the transmission filter on, it's on an 82 300SD, 722.3 tranny. Are there any spring loaded items that will fly apart when I take off the 20 or so bolts off? I need to take a look to see if my B2 band is broke, I have already checked the B2 piston and it is fine. Any suggestions anyone, what to look out for??

no springs to launch, just keep it clean. A big sheet of aluminum foil works well. There is a teeny little plastic bodied check valve that can fall out if you tip it over, but that's about it. There are 15 bolts that take a 10mm socket for that valve body, the 3 on the right side are slightly longer. Retorque evenly to 8 Nm. The band clearance should be 5.5-6.0 mm.

Thanks Pete,
I'll keep posting my findings. I was at a stop sign and when traffic cleared, I stepped on the accelerator and it felt like something let go and I had no more forward gears nothing. When I put it in any gear, I don't feel anything grab, like going into gear, the car moves maybe about half an inch and then won't move anymore, Reverse worked fine. So I've checked the B2 piston and that is intact, not broken. So I'm going to check the B2 band to ensure that's not broken. Then I'll go from there. If anyone has any suggestions please, please by all means suggest away! !

Unhappy Good Diagnosis M.B. DOC

Well I finally got to pulling off the valve body assenmbly and found that M.B.Doc you were correct in your diagnosis. My B2-band was broken. So I've got to pull the tranny out and send it to a shop to have the band replaced... Anyone ever replace a B2-band in a tranny? Is it difficult and time consuming for a medium DYI? While the tranny shop is in there replacing the B2-band, is there anything else they should be looking at replacing, besides the B2-piston?
