1991 190E 2.3 Litre, travelled only 88,00k's (55,000 miles).
Is there anyone that can advise what to do about a whining differential, mainly on the over-run (trailing throttle) at 30mph and 60mph. No excessive back lash between the pinion and crown wheel. Have tried 10% "Morays" additive to the diff oil without any improvement. The whine spoils an otherwise perfect car. I have been advised that this is not an uncommon problem with the 2.3 litre engine model. Any comments much appreciated. Murray Blackwood. New Zealand. |
Murray,
Once a diff has a whine to it the gears establish a pattern & that pattern won't go away. Either ring & pinion replacement or a complete diff replacement is the way to rid your car of that noise!! Heavy grease will mask the noise sometimes but can cause bearing damage. |
Murray....My 93 2.0l 190E had a diff whine after about 20000 kms on the clock. I lived with it till I sold the car with about 90000 kms on iy. It was just as you described, usually on the overrun, I just learned to live with it. Curiously though, the other 2 cars I now have run smooth and sweet !
