1980SD good reverse,weak drive-why?

I just purchased a 1981SD with 303K miles on it. It made it to Ohio from FLA with no problems. The guy I bought it from drove it around for a couple of months, then he started having transmission problems. It goes into reverse with a couple of seconds delay (it really didn't seem too bad to me), but when you put it into drive it just "eases" in, and barely moves forward a little but you have to rev the engine for it to do that. Reverse works perfectly fine. Are these the symptoms of a bad B2 valve, and/or the broken K1 spring? Thanks in advance!

Most likely leaking seal(teflon) on the b2 piston & excessive clearance on the band>>

I forgot to put in my posting that the original owner did change the fluid and filter to try to fix it.So i think we can rule that out-but thanks for the idea! As far as the seal on the B2 valve goes, can i replace this on its own or is it part of the valve? Should I try this first? How can I check for excessive clearance on the band?
