Faulty S320 side mirror
Please Help
I own a 1996 S320 The passenger side rear view mirror failed, electrically. All the wires shorted out for the motor and glass element. This blew the fuse several times. Thanks to Phil I replaced the mirror assembly. After installing the new mirror assembly, I can not control the up and down action. Left and right work fine. The drivers side works fine. I installed the old motor with the same results. I can here relays under the passengers foot rest. I opened up the relay box. All the relays and circuits appear ok. No burned contacks. The relay action is the same for both mirrors. The relays opens and closes but the mirror will not move up and down. I can adjust the mirror manually. Thanks Dave ps I miss my 123

Jiggle the wires!

This is one of the most common faults on W140s: self-destructing foldable mirrors. I guess M.B. did not do a good on the design of the folding mechanisn (as it did on most of the rest of the car).
When the side mirrors fail, usuallly the cables are toasted or cracked by the folding action in more places than it is usally visible. It is usually recommended to change the housing, motors (if defective) AND the cables from inside the door all the way to the mirrors.

I checked out all the wires in the door. Rung them out with a meter and checked for grounds.

Try hooking up a new mirror switch at the central console. The switches tend to short circuit too when there is a folding failure at the mirror base.

I looked over the switch and I am not sure how to remove it.

Update
Found the bidirectional IC chip failed. This is located in a enclosure with other relays and componets under the passengers foot compartment. Under $10.00 part. PS I miss my 123

What's a bi-directional IC chip?
In my 93 SD, right side mirror glass moves but the housing won't fold. Moves a little bit in but won't move back out. Sixto 93 300SD |

It is a 16 pin IC chip mounted on a circuit board.(small electronics). My memory control unit has 2 of these with other electronics.
The fold in of the mirrors is not part of the memory recall system. You may have a motor or hinge that is binding up.
