1990 450 sel gas smell/ rough idle

Dear Anybody: I purchased a beautiful 1990 420 SEL yesterday that has been sitting for awhile. It idles alittle rough at times and after driving it for about an hour in city i noticed a slight fuel smell which does dissipate, the previous owner said it does need an idle sensor relay- is this what is causing the fuel smell? thanks for any help- Siduri http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/images/smilies/confused.gif

Probably the only chance that the problem really is a idle sensor relay is if it really is a 1990 450SEL as that would make it some sort of foreign make that might have a idle sensor relay. Never heard of a idle sensor relay on a MB, but then again there was only one year 450SEL built out of the 70's, 1980, so this must be some model of Ford maybe.

You got a chassis number on that puppy. Mercedes Benz made the last 450SEL in 1980...... for your information.

Fuel smells in the car usually come through the trunk or through the AC fresh air intake. If you have no smell in the trunk then chances are the fuel is in the engine compartment. Most of the lines in the engine compartment are steel and don't leak. Unfortunately the common underhood leak is from the EHA (electro hydraulic actuator). To tell remove the aircleaner. The EHA is a black plastic cube on the side of the fuel distributor. It will be obvious if its leaking.

The fool thing is over 400 bucks list price. It is rather simple to change so if you have any diy interests, this could be a good project. The part could be bought significantly cheaper. This site sells it for $272.

But verify the problem first. There are a feed hose and return hose that are rubber and do occasionally leak. Therer are also conditions that can overload the charcoal cannister vent for the tank.

420 SEL gas smell

Good Morning: I took the car out for a two hour jaunt with speed up to 65 MPH, low and behold no more gas smell- go figure. Probably just sitting in the garage before I bought her? Have a great day.
