Hi,
Just today while my wife was driving home from work, the check engine light lit up on my 1999 C230K (55k miles). The car still drives fine and I can't seem to pinpoint the problem. Could anyone offer advise on what could be causing this problem? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Dave

Dave. If it happened after a fill up of fuel, reposition the fuel cap and drive for two days. IF that was the problem, the light will go off. If not, you will have to get the codes checked with a scanner.

It could be the 02 sensor, they usually go around 60K miles.

Dave,

If it's a CA car, then there should be a LED and push button which will read out the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) from the Diagnostic Module.

If you have it, then check my web page to see some of the TYPICAL DTCs for that module in menu item #5. Note that these codes are for 1992 thru 1995 'S' car (119.x and 120.x engines) and strictly speaking would not be applicable to your car, only coincidently. But they may give you an idea what's wrong.

If you get interested in 'fixing' DTCs yourself, a scanner is a must. AST makes the "POINTER" and it works very nicely for MB's from 1991 thru 2000. The DTCs are read directly from the LCD screen. There's more info on my page under Menu #2.

Good luck.

The W202's did not have the pushbutton read-out. This was only on earlier models. You will have to hook your car up to a scanner to retrieve the exact codes. But could likely be O2 sensor.

Thanks guys. I don't think it's the fuel cap. I hope it's only something minor. I don't have access to any diagnostic tools, so I will have to bring it to the dealer to get it checked out. I'll give an update on the reported codes once I find them out. Again thanks for all the help.

P.S- JimF, great car and site!

Dave
