Unhappy Jetronic ECU Brain 004 545 40 32

My 1987 560SL has this Jetronic ECU Brain 004 545 40 32. I have a 004 545 39 32 from my 1988 560 SEL. Can I use the 004 545 39 32 in my SL? Just for testing. My SL starts but runs only a few seconds then dies. The Jetronic ECU Brain 004 545 40 32 smells burnt.
Thanks in advance
Herb

You might try to look at why it got fried first, or you might have two dead cars. If it is indeed fried. Your idea is good, but I wouldn't use the ecu from my other car. Others here can prbably assist you in checking out the fuel injection in detail. They don't have a high failiure rate. However, a bad warm up regulator can cause the symptoms you describe. With CIS it's all about fuel pressure.

Yes either car should start & run on either ECU...I would try the ECU from the car that WON'T run on the running car!
