ignition timing

I have a 1985 190e 2.3l california version. wanted to reset timing due to ignition ping. my question is how does the scale on the balancer read? I can see the 0 mark and the pin for the sensor, but is the scale in 2 degree increments or what? right now when I put the timing light on it the pin on the balancer is on the indicator. is this 13 degrees btdc.? it pings at freeway speed under light load and pings under hard acceleration above 3500 rpm. I need to cure this ping, high octane fuel did not help. thanks for any replys
Joe

OF course seeing the marks are vert difficult on that car..You want 5-7 BTDC & that means just to the RIGHT of the O/T mark as you look from the front of the engine.

how far to the right side or the mark should I be? Tried to set it so the pin was on the crank sensor but had no power for take off. when I set 2 marks off the o/t mark it runs better but still pings slightly at rpm. do you think the egr valve is sticking? also does the cali. car have a dirrerent egr than the 47 states car? If so what should i do differently to adderess the problem? thanks for all the help.
