Here is a problem I don't understand. My front crankshaft seal leaks only when the car sits. There is nothing when it is running, only when it is shut off. Can anyone explain this? The oil level is correct and anyway it would have to be really over full to reach the seal.

How do you know for sure it's not leaking when you're driving also? I say this because how could you tell if it were leaking when you were driving, except for at slow speeds and then getting out to look?

After it has sat and leaked I wipe everything dry. I make sure it is dry before I drive it then I check after I have stopped. It is always dry after a run. Nothing shows up under the seal for several hours.

Me, Too!

Mark,

had the exact same problem with my '94 E320 Cpe shown below. Thought I was crazy!

I'd clean it off and drive the car. No leak. After sitting a few days, I see a seepage of oil from the front cranksaft seal. It wasn't alot but would run down the front of the pan and collect on the drip shield.

By the way, this was AFTER the seal was replaced. Was ok for about a year or so. Then it started to leak again.

I been told since that the inline six cyclinder 3.0, 3.2 engines did that alot.

Well it is nice to know I am only partly crazy
It is not alot. I changed the pan gasket thinking that was all of the leakage, and was surprised to see more.
