radar detector not getting power

I bought my wife a Passport 8500 X50 for her '99 E300 Turbodiesel and it is not getting power from the cig lighter plug. The detector works in my car and all the fuses in the '99 E300 seem to be OK - does anybody have a suggestion?

Check it with a voltmeter first. If you have power, check the fit of the plug. The MB lighter socket, like many European cars, is larger than you find on American cars, and the standard cords don't fit well.

If it were mine, I'd wire a cord into the system for it, and skip the lighter socket. I like to have the cigar lighter in there.

Nope - no power. Put new fuses in and they keep blowing. Don't know how to pull lighter socket after removing ashtrsay assembly. Must be a short some where.

I've been meaning to check to see if the little inserts for the fusebox are available, to add extra circuits. Something like that would be perfect for a radar detector. There's one extra fuse position in the small box behind the driver's door (at the side of the dash) and many more in the fusebox under the hood.

I'm not sure that your car is like mine, but on my '96 the interior of the underhood fusebox is cabin space - that is, it's connected straight through to the interior, right behind the instrument panel on the left. Running wires is easy.
