85 300D Turbo Deisel Climate Controls

I'm a new owner and love this car. It does have some
problems I'm dealing with.

My heater does not blow down below. It only blows air out the top or side vents. Also, occasionally nothing will come out of any vents. Can anyone identify this problem and
how to fix it.
