Red face Reference Sensor question

I just replaced the crankshaft on my 92 300E with a m103. When the old crankshaft broke, it also broke the reference sensor. Today I started up the car and it started fairly fast for a engine that was just rebuit. It probably took 5 or 6 turns before the engine fired up. My question is "what does the reference sensor suposed to do". The engine starts up good and it runs perfect and its not connected because its broken.......should I get a new one or is that sensor really not necesary?

From what I know, when my reference "position" sensor broke, after a certain temperature the car will turn off or engine stopped running. If I remember correctly, my car turned off when the temp was between 90-100.

Hope this helps.

you are reffeing to the one on the front of the engine at the dampner?

that is used only when connecting the diagnostic machine to the plug on the drivers fender. i doubt you will ever use it most shops have never seen the mercedes/bosch unit, much less connect it there. we have one at my shop, i have been there for 4 years and seen it used twice, it will be ok with out it.
