Most of those brands are re-refined oil. Ususally its the low-end oil the manufacture doesn't want to put its good name on, so they end up being store/generic brands.

Do you have solid evidence that Valvoline has placed re-refined oil in Napa containers?

If so, I'd like to see it; otherwise, your comments are nothing more than heresay.

I checked locally what they did with the used oil which I was placing in the recycle tank. I found that the oil was burned as heating fuel. Mybe some used oil is re-refined, but not all.

In Canada we have NAPA and an out fit called Lordco aswell. I've been told in the past by lordco that their inhouse discount oil and other parts stores discount oils awsell are re-refined. While it is a name-brand manufacture behind the oils, they are only sold as discount oils. Napa and Lordco are to small of companies to have their own oil fields and refineries....

15,000 mile oil changes with Magnum

I recently did a post, entitled, "15,000 mile oil changes" that you can read about.

The Magnum Long Drain oil (available at many places, but Auto Zone is where I saw it) is for either gas or diesels, and as a new type of oil (as compared to conventional oils from the 80's, etc.), can go a long time without being changed.

Read more on the post and people's responses, and then contact the company yourself to see what they say.

You mention you were told by Lordco that their discount oils were re-refined. I didn't see the same about NAPA in your post.

For starters, Canadian environmental laws are likely more stringent than in my country - US. The NAPA oils sold in the US @ NAPA parts stores carry an ILSAC GF-4 rating. I'm not an oil technologist, but would bet a buck, re-refined oil could not carry such a high rating.

Your comment about "too small to have their own fields" is where your credibility in this discussion goes south. As stated earlier, Ashland(Valvoline) makes the NAPA Premium Performance Oil that's sold in the US. Quaker State makes Wal-Marts oil, Exxon makes Honda's, etc.etc.

These are not re-refined oils as their ratings are to high to be such.

Re-refined oils in the US are labelled accordingly. Apparently that's not the case in Canada.

You answered you're own question. THe comment about being to small to own their own fields. That was a direct reference to NAPA's oil being outsourced as they are at the end of the day to small to own their own feilds. We all know its 4 companies providing the worlds motor oil, BP, Shell, Exxon and Ashland. As for the lordco comparsion, i said, i was told that all discount oil was re-refined including their own product(which i was comparing to the discount napa oil you mentioned). At the end of the day oil is oil, if its clean it'll never hurt you're car. New or re-refined.

"Unocal's "Firebird" brand and Safety-Kleen's "America's Choice" brand are produced in quarts, but not widely distributed. A few retailers, such as Wal-Mart and Kragen's, carry rerefined oil. Many Goodyear Service Centers also carry rerefined oil for oil changes."

"Unocal, Chevron, Safety-Kleen, Coast Oil, Rosemead Oil, and Lyondell are the major blenders. Rerefined oil comes in a variety of blends, suitable for different types of gas and diesel engines."

Hey,

http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/UsedOil/Rerefined/

Check this link out, it does a good job of explaining what it classify's as re-refined oil. To my understanding its used oil that's re-refined in a process which removes the contaimnents and new properties are added to create an oil at par with "virgin" oil.

It's not. The 15W40 comes in a 4-qt bottle (1 gal) and the 10W50 comes in a 5-qt, thus the price difference.

I found Castrol 15-40 today at WalMart. They call it "Tection" and it is labeled Diesel oil. I bought 2 gallons for about $8.50 each. (Walmart also has Shell Rotella and Mobil Delvac(?) in 15W40.

In canada we have 5 litre 15W40's of castrol at Walmart for little less then $12... when everyone else sells 4.4litres at about the same price sometimes a buck or two more..Strange... 1 Gallon is 3.78 Litres.

Trueog,

Right now I use a 70/30 mix of Chevron Delo 15W-40 and Havoline 5W-30 in my '97 C230, which I believe is the same engine as yours. Havoline and Chevron are the same company, and all good modern oils are pretty much compatible anyway, so mixing is not a worry. I do it to thin out the 15W-40 a little to eke out as much gas mileage as I can. (It probably makes almost no difference, but it's fun to see what I can achieve.)

My climate in Da Swamp is nastily hot for 8 months of the year, and less hot to once-in-a-while cold for the remainder, so I don't have to worry about my oil being too thick at startup.

The important thing to remember about 15W-40 is that it's used all over the world as a "universal" oil, in heat and cold, in diesels and in gas engines (because it's rated for both, "S" as well as "C"). The Chevron Delo is considered a super-dino oil by many, and a bargain next to the synthetics if you don't need synthetic. Dino oils these days are so good that if you don't do extended drains or have other severe service issues (like a turbocharged engine), synthetic is a waste of money.

As far as price, there is Havoline, being sold in the States at about $2.00 USD a quart, and Conoco/Phillips's TropArtic synthetic blend, going at Evil_Marts for about $1.68. But neither offers a 15W-40, as far as I know.

All the major oil companies make really good oils. You don't have to $pend a lot to get good oil.

By the way, has anyone here used Castrol Tection? I have not yet opened them and if you all feel I should instead try the Rotella or Delvac, please let me know. (I am reading very good things about Tection so far, but it is mainly marketing material by Castrol/BP)

Don't worry about it!!

If it were my car, I would not put 15w40. I would stay with 10w40. I use 5w30 on my 96C220 year round... and actually on all my gas cars. I reserve the 15w40 to the diesel.

The higher the numbers, the heavier the weight of the oil (less viscous), the engine works a bit harder. The lower numbers generally are thinner oil.

I have used only 5w30 for many years now and cars have been fine.

As to brands, I don't get to hung up on them. All have to meet specs and standards. Pretty much all say they meet or exceed bla-bla-bla standards. I saw Tractor Supply Co this week have 15w40 on sale for under $7 for 4qt container and I picked a few.
