Blower Fan Help please!

I have a 1983 300D. I've been lurking here for a while, I bought this car off a buddy of mine. I've been chasing this gremin down now for about a year- the blower fan doesnt work.

However, it works... sometimes. Like after a hard bump, for 30 seconds.

It also decides that it will work, when you push the bottom of the spindle. As long as you hold it there, it will spin really fast!

I've applied 12V directly, and it spins without a hitch.

i've taken it out, bought a junk yard one, etc etc, cleaned the bushings.. no good.

Other than the fact that it works when you push the bottom of the spindle... im leaning to the fact that it sounds like the blower controller. I noticed there are 3 wires, leading to a two prong outlet- what is the third wire controlling?

Finally, to diagnose the controller, how do I remove the glove box? Just pull the plastic rivets?

Thanks folks!
