What battery to buy.......

Hello,

I need to replace the MB battery in my 84 300CDT, do I need to purchase a MB battery or can I go to Auto Zone or Sears? How about an optima red top battery?

Thanks,

I've had no problems getting batteries at the auto stores. I don't think they have them at WalMart. Batteries are batteries. Just make sure the dimensional size is correct as well as CCA. The diesels like a stronger battery.

You must be a used car sales person not worried about beng stuck on the side of the road.
FYI: if you did not know, Wallmart is a very bad company. It accually lowers the economical standard of any city or town it moves into. You might think you are just "saving a buck" shoping at such a place, but in reality you are moving the american standard worldwide lower. Do a little research and you will see buying local supporting the people that reinvest money back into your community is the best gottdamn thing you can do. To put it blunt.

No problem. Places like walmart and home depot are convenient, but they have closed down a bunch of not only mom and pops but some of the other chains that have been around alot longer with better products. I too don't care for them.

Interstate. They will work great because they are rotated in stock, so they dont sit on the shelf long, and they have a prorated warranty. If you ever have to use it. MB99 is the number you want.

I'd vote for the Interstate battery, or a replacement Mercedes Benz battery.

But for a beater car anything from Costco or Autozone would be all right.

Yes, Interstate is the brand. Call around, I bought mine (2-3) at Advanced or Auto Zone. Can't remember right now.

I've used Interstate as well as the auto parts store brands in my diesels. They all work well for a few years, than you just need to spend another $80 and replace them again. I don't see any compelling reason to buy MB batteries. Batteries are just wear items that need to be replaced periodically, regardless of brand.

What battery to buy...

Just as I thought, I'll see if I can pick one up tomorrow.

I found the battery on the Interstae site, model MTP-93 :

Cranking Amps 1000
Cold Cranking Amps 850

I'll take the old battery with me just to make sure that size is the same and the CCA is the same.

Thank you for the input!!

Thanks,
While some folks may say otherwise, I gotten excellent service from AC Delco batteries. The wifes caddy went over 6+ years and the suburbans' lasted 7 years on the original batteries. I replaced them both with the same. The one in my old GMC is 4+ years and going strong. Just put one in our SL this spring.

My brother sings the same praise of the Interstate brand.

I've had so-so experience with Wal Mart brand. They never last as long and they are rated for. At least the few I've had never did.

Here is my problem with Interstate batteries. There are two prices on each battery, a list price and a sell price. If you buy a battery, and it goes bad before the warranty expires, they pro-rate a new one. But they pro-rate at the list price, not the sell price. So if you buy a battery for $100 the list price might be $150. If you have to pay 50% for the new one, you pay 50% of $150 not $100. So you fork out $75 instead of $50. I don't know the exact numbers and I don't know if they still do this so you might want to look into it and read the fine print before you deal with them.

I believe that is the retailers choice, unless of course you are getting it directly from interstate.

If you want a MB battery do this:
Call MB roadside and say your battery died, can I get another. Many people have been bought new battery's by MB roadside, plus they seem to install them for free!!

I really want to try this, I think they charge you $130 for the battery. But talk about hassle free, you can sit inside and watch TV as the whole battery thing is delt with.
