A/C and Blowing hot always.

The A/C on my sons 1988 300TE is not working... I think it has a leak and or needs a recharge of R12, He is saving up for that, and is not so worried as he will do that in due course.
The problem is regardless of what position the setting are, the blower is pushing HOT air from the windscreen demister vents and side vents if they are open... making it less bearable!
Is this normal?

All the fuses in the fuse box are good.
I may have a vac leak, but how do I check?

Well Well!
Ok, I looked at the fuses... none blown....
But I did notice that when you hit the defrost button, the fan did not come on fast as it did before....
So, I looked at the fuses again... wiggled and rotated #7... and hey presto... defrost mode working again!
Wow, good call MBshop... Thanks!
Now, I will see if the thing still blows hot tomorrow!

Are the center vents blowing cold air?

Mmmmm.
Well, I just went out and drove it.... this is odd...
So, from home and starting off.... temp on min, fan on low and ECO button pushed.... nothing felt from center vents... they are open... hot from side vents and screen vent... and I mean HOT!
Drove two miles..... stopped and picked up my son from work.... he drove and I fiddled.
Hit defrost.... HOT from all vents and Fan comes on max....
Hit Eco button again... suddenly, I get cool air from facia vents and hot from screen vent and then it cools... giving ambient air from all vents.... as it should I think.

Does that make any sense?

You mentioned the ECO button. What about the one to the left of it. That button is used to engage the a/c compressor.

I will try that today and repost, thatks for the help Mike.
The AC is not working... We think its needs a recharge as the car sat unused for a year... he does not have the $ for that at this time... just want ambient air at the vents... is that not realistic?

It sounds like you have not depressed the correct button to engage the a/c compressor. Again, depress the one to the left of the ECO button.

Ok, replaced the OVP yesterday, as noted in my SSS post.

Mike, I pushed the next button over... confirm that the A/C is not working/cooling... all I get is a little more air from the vents... like the blower kicks up a notch.
I did notice that the system is very erratic.... sometimes I get hot air from the screen vent and sometimes not... sometimes when I push the auto or high fan position I get no increase in air... and then after I hit the defrost, it works, and cycling back to the ECO or A/C button gets it working again.
I notice that sometimes after I start the car, I hear pops and noises from in the dash... but they happen, say 20 to 30 secs after when I first start the car...
The Economy gauge in the cluster is very erractic too...
Vac leak?
