Have you tried rocking the steering wheel while turning the key?

Try reading these threads for ideas/help.
The tumbler and/or steering lock will need to be replaced with new.

OK, if the key is sitting as a rock I have no idea. But if you can twist it a little but as you say not get it out or to start, it may be the little electric switch close to the gear selector. I have not opened this up myself, but it should be pretty easy to check if somebody can fill you in how....

Moving the stick from P and back, if possible, may also get it into the right position..?

This points to an electric gremlin, possibly in this switch. Maybe it is just to lift the frame around the stick and have a look? Sorry I am no expert, just guessing from what I have read elsewhere...

You can also call 1-800 FORMERCEDES to inquire about your car's symptoms. Over the phone, a service representative will try to coach you through getting back on the road. It's free.
