Only One Aux Fan Coming On??

Hi all,

I noticed today when I was charging the A/C on my '91 300E that only one of the two aux fans was coming on when the A/C was turned on. It spins freely by hand and the other one works perfectly.

Any ideas? There isn't some kind of relay for turning on one & not the other, is there? I thought they were switched together...

Thanks!

You are correct...they are wired together...most likely a bad motor

One of mine did that. I took it out and apart and found the brushes had hung up. I loosened them up, lubed them, put everything back and its been spinning ever since.

Give it a whack with a rubber mallet while the other one is spinning. If it tries to start up or actually starts up, you have confirmed that the fan in question needs replacement.

Anyone have any brilliant ideas on pulling them?

Or should I just expect to pull the radiator/condensing coil...

Thanks!

It's not that tough to R&R the fans. You basically just remove the fan shroud. Remove the clips that hold the radiator and the condensor.
This allows you to lean the top of the radiator back . Now just look at the framework and remove the bolts. Several are a little tough.

While you are in there clean out the mess of debris and bugs at the lower portion of the condensor.

Just did this job about 5 months ago. I had one dead fan, which I replaced.
Disassembly of a dead fan looks to me to be very tough. New ones are only something like $120.00 on the net.

Arthur,
I checked the wiring diagram and saw they were in parallel, unlike my memory, and deleted the post, but you were too quick and caught it. The resistor for hi and low is in series to both as you say, not as I did.
