It is clamped in by a spring tensioned clamp. You need to pull it down to get it loose and this can be a bit difficult sometimes. You haven't got a rear view mirror with electronic parts, so you cannot break it.
Try to pull it down, it should work!

MBenz, I have a '98 C230 and my rear view mirror came loose. I don't know if I can fix it myself or if I need to take it to a shop and have it fixed. I want to try and open the thick rear view, but I'm afraid that I might screw up the auto-dimming sensors. What do you think?

thanx.

Be very careful with opening that auto dimming rear view mirror. The pins that hold the plastic cap break very easily and are not for sale as part only!
If you want to take the auto-dimming mirror out, you have to stick your fingers over the foot of the mirror at the windshield side to pull the foot and not the mirror.

The mirror is attached to the foot and pin inside the thick mirror part itself and if I were you, I would bring it to the dealer to have them fix it. The cap at the back of the auto dimming rear view mirror is just too vulnerable to start pulling...

greetingz,
