W124 Oil consumption

I have an 89 420sel that is going through about 2qts of oil every 500 miles or so...have tried heavier 20w50 to see if it would help slow down burning but it's not...have no visible oil leaks but do see smoke especially on heavy acceleration. Any ideas? Car starts, idles, and runs well otherwise. 135k on odometer. W126, not 124.

Valve stem seals are easy to replace but you need a special tool to do it. They are cheap and usually cures the oil consumption problem.

You can try the new valve stem seals as suggested - won't hurt. I did the same with a 103 motor - straight 6. Oil consumption dropped quite a bit, then about 20,000 mi. later, started up again. My rate of loss is not anywhere near what yours is.

I would not be surprised if your valve guides were also worn out.

I have done 2 of my V8's. Over 50k each since I did them. No oil consumption on either of them yet.

I had to do the same thing on my 88 SEL.

While you're in there, eyeball the passenger side cam for wear.
