Question Starter/safety switch prob! need opinions on problem!

Just replaced neutral safety switch on my 560 sel and it still would not start. so i replaced the starter- you can bypass the safety switch and it will start but the starter stays engaged. I am a bit stumped on what else to look at. Only had this car a short while so not familiar with this model. i had a 380 sel and barely had any trouble out of it> NOt a mechanic obviously- just a chiropractor trying to fix my favorite ride! What else do i try?

Did you adjust the neutral start switch when you installed it? The quick way is to set the selector to reverse and turn the switch such that it rests at the midpoint of the arc that illuminates the reverse lights.

Is there fore-aft play in the shift lever? If so then fit new bushings to the shift rod that bridges the shift lever and the transmission.

If there is fore-aft play in the shift lever then possibly setting the lever to P does not put the transmission completely in P, at least to the extent that the neutral start switch senses that the lever is in P.

Turn the key to start with the shift lever in N and the park brake fully engaged. Move the lever forward and aft to see if there is a point that the starter engages. Don't move the lever into the R or D detents!
