89 300e hard shifting

I just picked it up yesterday. It shifts really hard into 3 and 4 and I can hear it down shifting pretty loud too.
Is the tranny trashed?
I checked the fluid and it looked full (too full really, it was 2 inches past the full mark).
Is there any thing else I should check on my own before I look for a shop to take my $$.
it has 160k

300e tranny

sounds like there is no vacuum to the modulator.there is vac line from intake to left side of trans where modulator is.possible break in line possible rubber vac cap on modulator is cracked and finally bad modulator which will result in engine sucking fluid out of trans and burning it.check it out good luck.

Remove the hose and check for vacuum at the modulator, you should have manifold pressure, about 18 to 21”; it’s located on the driver’s side middle of the transmission. No vacuum follow the line up into the back of the engine, check for a broken or disconnected hose/line.

With no vacuum to the modulator ALL shifts should be harsh. Another possibility is a broken K2 accumulator piston or K2 spring in the valve body.
