What are the effects of the MB SLS suspension?
I am wondering how the self leveling suspension system affects the ride and performance of the cars on which it is installed. It appears only to be present on the heavier, more powerful models.
What is the alternative? Air suspension? Independent shocks?

I have SLS on the 16v - a light car. It came on the rears only.
Also have it on the SL, all corners. I like the ride on both. I have replaced spheres and shocks. I would never butcher one of these cars with regular shocks. The replacement are somewhat pricey, but in the grand scheme of costs asociated with owning one of these cars, the cost of maintaining SLS is peanuts. Knock on wood..........

I found a 380 Euro with SLS. I'm curious what shocks I should run up front to match the rears? Bilstein comforts or Sachs/Boge to match the hyd ones?

The OE shocks match just fine.
Seems like changing one end and not the other achieves imbalance.

What he said - stock set up is best, or if you like a slightly tighter ride, get the HD shocks. Pretty happy with the many HD Bilsteins I've bought.
