How do I replace the valve cover stud? 190-16v
I snapped a valve cover stud off the head of my 16v when i finished the valve adjustment (yeah, i was using the torque wrench!). How do I get the old stud off, and what is the torque setting for getting the new stud on?
Any other tricks to this repair? cheers, dan r. |

is there any stud sticking out?
if so you may be able to grab it with vice grips and twist it out. if not then i would center punch the broken stud and drill it out very very carefully with a left hand drill small enough to miss your threads. then tap the hole clean and install new stud. take your time and be very careful. good luck tom w

If there is still a little bit of a stud sticking out, you may also be able to take a dremel with a cut off wheel and cut a notch in it and try to us a flat head screw driver and get it out. Learnt that the hard way with a front shock bolt once.

Yeah, happily there is a stud sticking out; i'll see if i can grab it with the vice grips.
Seriously, how tight do i screw in the new one? I'd imagine tighter than 9nm because that is the rating for the nut that holds the valve cover on. I'm assuming the way to put it back in is with two nuts and tightening the top one. Thanks guys, cheers, dan r. |
