Recoding keyfob on W210.
Is it possible to recode a keyfob that I get from a junkyard for my 2000 E320?
Dealer wants close to $300 Canadian for a new key from Mercedes. Thanks, Alex |

Smartkeys are cut and coded by MB from their database, I would shop dealers for a good price!
Even when you get a correct one it will talk to the car and establish a handshake which could take up to 30 minutes |

Some dealers charge less than others. San Diego wanted around $160 but Carlsbad only charged $122.50, so I felt like I was getting a bargain

If you order an "additional" key it will work right out of the box, no waiting. If you order a "replacement" key it can take awhile to cancel the non-used rolling codes for the key it replaced.
No, you can't use a junkyard or eBay key, it doesn't work that way. Gilly

Thanks everyone.
The actual price in Toronto, Canada is CA$275 which includes 15% tax. The fob is around $195 and the metal insert is around $40. However I am sitting in (just outside) Tokyo, Japan and it seems that here every part is about 30% - 50% more expensive than in Canada. The markup is unreal. Unfortunately, as far as I know, Fastlane doesn't ship outside of the US. A short list: spark plugs: 2,730 yen = US$23.45 I need 12 air filter : 6,130 yen = US$52.66 fuel filter : 20,000 yen = US$171.87 coolant : 2,300 yen = US$19.76 per liter I think Car is a 2000 E320. The dealer quoted me 26,500 yen for the fob and 5,700 for the metal key. Tax is only 5%, what a joy. I may have to bite the bullet. Alex |

Is there someone in the US (family or relative) that could order it and send it to you? That person would have to be pretty close to you as they would have to convince the dealer parts personnel that you're in Japan and need the key, etc. They're pretty fussy about ordering keys. I don't think Phil can order keys, not a key like this.

Thanks Gilly.
The dealers in Toronto want the ownership and two pieces of ID presented by the actually owner of the vehicle for security reasons. The car is in my wife's name, it would be somewhat difficult for me to pass off as a japanese female. :-) So I might just have to bite the bullet (we bought the car on an auction and it came with one key). However, I would like to order a list of everyday maintenance items and last time I tried to buy parts from Fastlane (it was a few years back I admit) I was advised that they do not ship outside of the US. Bummer. Thanks, Alex |
