1990 300 sl change over to 5 speed info wanted

i wondered if it would be hard to change over a 1990 300 sl from the auto to the factory 5 speed set up

is anyone reading this forum familiar w/the differences between the two cars? can the swap be made relatively easy?

thanks

Why? The five speed sticks are quite available.

Have you driven one? It isn't a very nice setup - bad clutch, long throw, dogleg shift pattern. I would try one if you haven't yet. The short answer is that it would be a big job, plus the parts are rare.

i would think that the parts are much the same as for a five speed in an e class or a 190 or c class.

perhaps the shifter might be different.

i dont know from experience but i would be surprised.

Ken, I suspect that the manual transmission cars have an interlock to prevent the car starting in gear without the clutch pedal depressed. Incorporating that interlock into an automatic car's wiring may present a problem so I'd carefully research the details before starting what appears to be a simple mechanical swap.

The transmission is entirely different - from an outside source. I forget who made it but it's the same transmission as in a Porsche 928. It's very sturdy - it just shifts like a truck. It was never very popular in a 928 either.
