Post Power Window Problem w124

Hi Guys
I have a 1987 w124, the power windows will not work when the ignition is off and the door open. My w126 windows work like this. Is there a common reason that this will not operate, like a relay.
Any help would be apprieciated as its quite annoying to turn on the ignition again to get the windows up when you forget to.
Thanks Mark

Don't know about the 87 but neither of my 124 windows work with the ignition off. Always assumed that is the way it should be.

Non-US market 126 cars had this feature (DOT rules designed to keep children from strangulation playing in an otherwise unoccupied vehicle). To my knowledge, no 124's had this feature. Mark

Mark, that's the way the W124 car windows are designed to work. It's a safety feature that owners with small children are thankful for.

Thanks

Thanks guys,
It does say in the manual that it has this feature, but I do have three small children and so I will assume everybody is correct and take it as a blessing instead of a curse.
Thanks agian.

Mark,

I notice that you are located in Australia. Only on certain year models did the Australian design rules allow the power windows to operate without the ignition on but with a door open. As an example, my 1973 350SLC has this feature as does the 1990 190E-2.3 I am currently dismantling. My other 1990 190E-2.3 (at just one month younger than the one I am dismantling) and my 1990 300TE (at one month younger still) both do not have this feature. The 190E with the feature has an additional contact switch (2 instead of 1) for each front door.

The 300TE does however have the "convenience" feature whereby if any windows or the sunroof are left open, the key can be held turned in the lock position in either front door and the the open windows and sunroof will close. Likewise, when returning to the car, if the key is held in the unlock position all the windows will open, very nice to allow the hot air to escape on a hot day. Your 1987 W124 may be too early to have this feature.

Greg
