95 s500 overheating,loosing coolant

My 95 s500 low coolant light came on and the temp reached 120 before i qas able to shut the engine off . When i open the hood there was coolant on the left side of the air cleaner cover. There is a hose coming from the left side cylinder with a plastic tube and another hose going to the fire wall with a plastic tube also. It looks like they should be connected but not sure can anyone help ?

That's the infamous "tee" that's mounted on the back firewall. There's been a number of horror stories when it breaks b/c most of the coolant is almost immediately lost! As a result, many engines have seized.

Get it towed and have the 'tee' replaced. Good time to do a flush.

Unhappy

Thanks jim, I got the tee from the dealer today. I wonder why mercedes didn't make the tee out of copper or something more durable.

Jim and/or Fazer: could you please provide me with a part number and a little more detailed direction for its location in the engine bay for this "infamous" Tee on M119s.

Just to be on the safe side I would like to check this part out. Especially that my W140 is due for a coolant flush next month.

Deeply thankful in advance to both of you for the info.

Armondo, I don't have one handy to give you the PN but you can 'see' it on the driver's side just behind the left portion of the V8 engine; right behind the valve cover. Look on the back wall and you'll see a 'black' plastic (cryolac) four (4) port 'tee'.

There must be some 'static' pressure on this part due to the four hoses that come off of it. Also it must get tired, like metal fatigue and break.

I just changed mine after a car was towed in with it broken!! Actually mine was still 'new' but my tech insisted!

Is this part an S500 specific part, or is it used in other W140's? Like the 320 for example.

Jim: thank you so much for the info and advice! I will get the part A.S.A.P. and have it changed when I order the coolant flush performed. It is better to be on the safe side on these issues.
