Puddle after DIY oil and filter change
Getting a oil puddle on the floor (under area of oil filter). Used MB filter kit. Strange thing is that it came with 5 O-rings and you only need 4 (the extra was a mid sized one).
Have the following questions. 1. Does it make any difference which way the filter element is installed? The element did not have an end marked as the top (1 end was only marked with part numbers...so it seems it can be put on in either direction. 2. Does the factory oil filter kit normally come with 5 O-rings? Seems the last time I changed it the kit only came with the 4 required O-rings. Now I'm wondering if the kit came with the wrong O-rings (i.e. QA issue). After checking to make sure the large O-ring for the cap was seated properly, it seems the edge might be extended a tad bit beyond the cap's edge (maybe O-ring is to thick or to big. 3. Would over tightening the cap cause a poor seal? Thanks in advance. Ed 2001 CLK320 Cab Last edited by serndipity; 10-05-2006 at 10:51 PM. |

I've been chastised for posting links in response to questions, but have you read this article -
http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/OilFilter1 1) The top of the filter usually has a wire handle. 3) Over tightening the cap can cause it to crack! Sixto 93 300SD |

This article is probably more relevant to your engine -
http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/OilFilter2 I don't think this newer style filter has a wire handle so I don't know if there's a 'this end up' indicator. Sixto 93 300SD |

The 2nd URL is the one that applies.
There is no wire bail on the filter cartridge. Verified that the large top O-ring is where it should be....but still leaking. Still a mustery. |

it needs to be TIGHT, tighter then you can get it with your hand.
the extra o-ring is for the 272 engine, which uses the same filter. just throw it away.

Replaced the large O-ring and the leaking stopped.
The one that came with the MB filter kit was slightly larger. |
